3 Real Signs of Strength

I used to think I was weak. In my darkest moments, I would declare “I’m not strong!” and collapse into a pile of sadness. I sometimes let others bulldoze me so there seemed to be nothing left of my individuality or self-esteem. I didn’t believe I was strong, therefore I wouldn’t even try to be. I gave in too many times to forces I deemed stronger than me.

But I’ve realized now that this is what builds strength. To be strong, we have to at least once in a while feel weak — and ironically, the feeling of weakness doesn’t entail weakness. It may actually be strength itself.

We have to face adversity to know who we really are, and that is strength. Turning away from our deepest darkness is a kind of weakness. We must know the shadows.

Bad stuff happens in life. We know this. How you handle it is what really counts.

Did someone betray you? Did the love of your life dump you? Did someone you loved die too young? Did you find yourself in wartime where the world seems to be falling apart? These things are awful. But you’re still here. What are you going to do with these experiences?

You Survived
