I Forced Myself to Be Happy and I’m Not Sad About It

Some people think that all of your thoughts are equally valid and all deserve air time on the wavelengths of your mind. But I don’t think that’s true. Some thoughts are pointless and some are harmful. You want to live in a reality that’s enjoyable, right? We create our realities with our thoughts, so we need to practice mental discipline and not let the darkness take over our minds.

A year ago on the day that I am writing this, someone died who was really special to me. And I was sucked into an abyss of existential quandaries. I doubted all the reasons I’d thought I wanted to live. I couldn’t see any light in this world. I just surrendered to the dark thoughts. I let them wash over me and didn’t put up a fight at all. I was drowning.

I think it’s important to let ourselves experience these moments of total darkness and give them some air time in the wavelengths of our minds. But we have to understand that ultimately, the goal is to come back toward the light. Otherwise, this existence is going to be needlessly painful.

Nobody actually wants to suffer in this lifetime. Part of my depression was recognizing this and also grasping the difficulty in embodying…
