Is Ego Death Like Suicide?
Yeah, it kinda is. But there’s an alternative.
Your ego is part of your whole self and it allows you to be a person in this world. Through your preferences, memories, beliefs, and judgments, you are an individual. However, the ego is not the whole self. Spiritually, you are much more than this. Your greater self — your soul — has the ability to manifest as other egos and personalities, able to experience a myriad of lifetimes and roles.
So, when we explore something like “ego death” it’s basically exploring “normal” death. If our personalities and lives as individuals are actually eliminated, what are we? Our earthly existence loses its meaning. It’s death. We never really die anyway since we are essentially eternal. So, if we are just souls connected to physical bodies without the ego there to give us motivation for life, then we are nothing, really. We’ve lost “life” as it is supposed to be.
I don’t think we need to pursue ego death at all. We should be focusing on letting go of the ego and its challenges.
The ego makes us who we are. It gives me a thread of life to follow so I am a real human being. It grants me a story. Without this plot, I am not here for any particular reason at all. I should learn to enjoy…
