This Is Why My Work May Never Achieve Fame

I simply can’t do “fake”

Hi, I’m Emily. My brand relies on realness. I value human connection. I am here to help people on their spiritual path. I work well with clients individually, and I also love teaching classes as long as they’re interactive. I thrive on the human aspect of spirituality, and I believe my followers do, too. People search for genuine stories and messages, and I take joy in providing that, even if it’s scary or messy.

Today, I tried to record a guided meditation that I intended to post on YouTube. I was working with a professional who checked my recording, and we had to keep re-recording it because the sound quality sucked. After guiding the same meditation about world peace five times, I felt like I was no longer being genuine.

I was regurgitating the experience I wanted to convey. The joy was gone. My humanity was gone. I was connected to all of this recording gear and hunched over to talk clearly into a microphone, not in an environment that anyone would ever actually meditate. It was disingenuous. I don’t want to portray myself as fake to my students and followers.

I found myself forcing it, playing a role to sound polished on social media, but absolutely doing it in a fake way. I remembered that’s not what this is about — I am not here to gain followers…
