What Would Happen If We Stopped Wanting Things?
All of us have an addiction to desire.
We’re trained to think we need more stuff all the time. Not just material things but relationships, status, and future plans. Having goals is something we’re told we need, and if we don’t have desires and goals people think we’re weird. We’re taught to think we need to want things. We’re supposed to want to want.
But is it true that we are nothing without our desires? Do we need them?
I think we should throw all assumptions out the window and start from scratch. Imagine: what would life be like without wanting things?
Think about what you’d be doing if you simply didn’t have desires anymore. If you didn’t pine for a person, or a trip abroad, or a certain lifestyle. What would you be left with? I think it would absolutely change your life. All of a sudden, you’d be grateful. You’d let things just unfold.
When you stop looking for a future modality, you are left with the present moment and the current state of existence. Instead of focusing your attention on what you don’t have but you desperately want, you shift focus to what you have already. It feels pretty good.
