Why Are We So Encouraged to Never Be Sad?

We hide it. It’s like a dirty little secret. A friend or coworker might ask, “how are you doing?” and you lie. You say you’re doing great.

If you tell the truth, you might have to deal with them trying to “help” you or, worse, their apathy. Because they’re probably depressed, too. At least you’re self-aware.

People don’t want to deal with sadness. Depression isn’t kosher. It’s not the cool thing to be.

Beyond the veil, a lot of us are hurting. We feel like it’s all hanging by a thread. Mental health can come crashing down at any moment.

What’s sadder than this? Our society forces us to suppress our feelings. It’s looked down upon to feel and to fall apart. Why aren’t we supposed to be sad? It’s like the world really thinks it’s best if we’re happy all the time.

When we’re “diagnosed” as depressed, it’s viewed as a disease that needs to be cured.

Other people will rush at you with all kinds of remedies to get you away from that big, scary depression that is within you —and ironically, which can’t be cured by distracting you with menial human activities or by…
