Identity is fuzzy. Where do you end and I begin?

How are you you? How am I me?

I love having my mind blown. Losing the mind and gaining clarity again is always the best adventure. And I’ve never been more mind-blown by a philosophical problem than by that of personal identity.

Are you really what you think you are? You’re a soul having a human experience. But as souls, is there any borderline between you and other souls?

How do you know what you really are? Where did all of the parts of your identity come from? To me, there’s no obvious reason why I like vanilla ice cream instead of chocolate or that I have a fear reaction to needles but not snakes…what has made up ‘me’? Where did these thoughts I have come from?

Identity is something we are so very attached to and yet it arose without our awareness or memory of it. You simply don’t know where ‘you’ originated. You don’t know why you’re here. You only know ‘who’ you are because you’re a functioning character in society, so all of your ideas about your individuality rely on relationships with other people, things, and concepts. But as a soul, you are not as clear-cut.

As a soul, you have motivations and drives that shape the path of your life. You make decisions based on these deep urges as a soul, but sometimes your fictional ego-based desires override them. You make up a story about who you are that simply isn’t real. The only real things are love, soul desires, and heart wisdom. But even these can feel fluid, and there’s so much more about us that is optional.

If you’re a soul, what makes you a person?

There’s no clear answer to this. There is nothing we know that proves you are a person with a concrete identity except your own perception as a human. If you let go of this concept of personhood, you can free your mind from thinking that you’re one thing or another. You can become a free spirit.

There is no way of defining the end of you and the beginning of anyone else. There’s no boundary between you and the rest of existence…
